Frequently Asked Questions
Can your FRTW be used for a sill plate application?
Can I cut, rip, or mill Biewer FRTW?
Typical joining cuts, end cuts, and drilled holes will not adversely affect the fire performance of Biewer’s FRTW, and no field treatment is required to maintain flame spread ratings. However, ripping or milling of Biewer’s fire-retardant-treated lumber is not permitted, as these operations could adversely affect the surface burning characteristics. Biewer’s fire-retardant plywood can be ripped as required.
Can your FRTW be exposed to the weather or wetting?
In general, our FRTW can be exposed to weather or wetting (rain) for normal construction periods.

Can I paint or stain FRTW?
How is the fire retardant chemical applied to Biewer's wood products?
Our FRTW is pressure treated into the wood products. The building codes do not allow wood products “coated” or “painted” with fire retardant coatings to be used as substitutes for pressure-impregnated (pressure-treated) fire retardant treated wood.
